Gear!

One of my absolute favourite topics – what do you need / what makes the experience better. Of course most items are very personal and subjective in terms of preferences so I think it is more useful to talk about items in general.

The Ultimate Trail Running Gear Guide: What to Wear and Bring

Trail running is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. However, it’s important to have the right gear to make your experience safe and enjoyable.

Here is a complete checklist of the gear, clothing, and accessories you need to wear and bring when you head out on the trails.

Gear

  • Trail running shoes: Trail running shoes are designed for uneven terrain and provide better grip and support than regular running shoes.
  • Running watch with GPS: A running watch with GPS can track your distance, pace, and time, and can also be used to navigate trails.
  • Technical running cap and headband/neck gaiter: A technical running cap or headband can help protect your head from the sun and keep sweat out of your eyes. A neck gaiter can also be used to warm up your neck or cover your face in cold weather.
  • Running hydration pack or belt: A running hydration pack or belt can be used to carry water, snacks, and other essentials.
  • Running sunglasses: Running sunglasses should be lightweight and have polarized lenses to reduce glare.
  • Running headlamp: A running headlamp is essential for running in the dark.
  • Trail running poles: Trail running poles can help you balance and propel yourself forward on uneven terrain.
  • Wireless headphones: Wireless headphones can allow you to listen to music or podcasts while you run.
  • Trail running clothes: Trail running clothes should be made of breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics.
  • Trail running accessories: Other accessories you may want to consider include a first-aid kit, sunscreen, bug spray, and a whistle.

Nutrition

It’s important to stay hydrated and fueled when trail running – depending on distance/duration of course. Bring plenty of water or sports drink, and snacks that are easy to digest, such as energy gels, bars, or fruit.

Preparation

Before you head out on the trail, it’s important to do some preparation. This includes:

  • Planning your route: Choose a route that is appropriate for your skill level and fitness level.
  • Checking the weather forecast: Dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
  • Telling someone where you are going: Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable trail running experience.

In future posts I will come back to specific recommendations, so stay tuned!
